Radio Maximum hosts Sergei Stillavin and Gennady Bachinsky were arguing during their talk show about how visiting relatives should be treated when a female guest host weighed in -- and provoked an off-color outburst.
"Whose side are you on, little bitch?" Stillavin lashed out at Svetlana Zeinalova, a Maximum employee.
A few days earlier, Stillavin and Zeinalova chatted frankly about women's behinds. "I don't get it why women often sleep in shirts but leave their butts naked," Stillavin said.
"In your 30 years, you haven't been able to guess why women go to bed with naked butts?" Zeinalova replied.
Stillavin and Bachinsky are the driving force behind local shock talk radio, something of a Russian version of provocative U.S. shock jock Howard Stern. But the two natives of St. Petersburg say their brand of humor, which teeters on the brink of sexism and obscenity, is all their own.
Listeners can't seem to get enough of the duo, whose "Two in One" talk show runs from 7 to 11 on weekday mornings.
The show drew an average of 52,000 listeners on weekdays in June in Moscow, beating all other music radio stations in the 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. time slot, according to market research company Comcon. Maximum itself is ranked seventh among music radio stations in the capital.
"I am deeply convinced that any average person who is physically fit is interested in sex, and that's why we have a lot of sex-related news and this kind of shit. I think it's normal and that it is something people can laugh about," Stillavin, a tall man with glasses, said in a recent interview.
"Of course, we have our special language. ... We can call people idiotic names and call them homosexuals. ... It's just that the people who call in play this game with us. They listen to us, and they accept the terms," he said.
Sometimes, strong emotions justify the use of off-color language, Stillavin said. "When, for example, terrorists set off a bomb, I think that I can call these people jerk-offs on the air and be sure that no sound-minded person will take me to court for offending his morals. Everybody understands that terrorists who set off a bomb are in fact jerk-offs," he said.
Bachinsky, an equally tall man with stubble, also defended their use of words that were unimaginable on the radio five years ago. "For us it's just a way to attract the audience's attention," he said. "No doubt we sometimes lay it on too thick. But we are people, and we improvise. We don't agree on anything before we go on the air."
Bachinsky and Stillavin often laughed at their own jokes as they spoke. Having gotten up early for their show, Stillavin occasionally yawned.
In addition to being hosts, both hold senior positions at the radio station: Bachinsky is a producer and Stillavin is the programming director.
Russian Media Group, which owns Radio Maximum, stands by the show. "'Bitch' is not an offensive word," said group president Sergei Arkhipov.
Maximum targets a student audience, and the hosts should not bow to other groups "that may consider the word 'butt' offensive," Arkhipov said.
"Unfortunately, that's how young people speak. That's the norm for them," he said. "What is important is not what you say but how you say it, the intonation."
He noted that Bachinsky and Stillavin did not try to get away with anything close to Howard Stern's sex talk and antics, which have cost Stern and his employers hundreds of millions of dollars in indecency fines in the United States.
"Compared with Howard Stern, Bachinsky and Stillavin are cultured people, close to aristocrats," he said.
Radio Maximum general director Maxim Makarov said there were limits to what the two hosts could say on the air. Under a contract they signed last year, they cannot use "informal vocabulary that is too vulgar" or make ethnically or politically charged jokes, he said.
"We try to keep them within certain standards," he said. "We have a corporate culture. We have long discussed this so that they can have fun and the company is happy."
The law does not make the use of obscenities a punishable offense. However, before the Criminal Code was amended a few years ago, it contained a provision that considered the public use of profanity to be petty hooliganism, punishable by up to 15 days of prison, said Nikolai Novikov, a senior official at the government's media decency watchdog, the Federal Service for Media Law Compliance and Cultural Heritage.
One of the last cases under the old law saw an editor jailed for five days in July 2000 for publishing obscenity-peppered telephone conversations attributed to senior regional officials in her Vladivostok newspaper.
Novikov said his agency had not received any complaints about Radio Maximum's morning show.
Dzhemir Degtyarenko, editor of media industry magazine Novosti SMI, said the talk show was the most provocative of its kind but tame to its young listeners. "They produce the show to suit their target audience," he said. "Some people might consider some words offensive, but they are not offensive for that audience."
Ruslan Nikolayev, a producer for Radio Energia, which also targets youth, said, "I personally don't like this kind of humor, but it's done professionally."
"Two in One" was conceived in 1997 thanks to women's sanitary pads, Stillavin said. Then a news reporter at St. Petersburg's Radio Modern, Stillavin gave an on-air analysis of the local pads market that split the radio station's staff. Some women said it was indecent to discuss such things on the air, while others argued that the issue was newsworthy, Stillavin said. "I understood that society didn't have a definite position about decency," he said.
After a stint at Russkoye Radio, Stillavin and Bachinsky, a disc jockey from Radio Modern, moved to Radio Maximum in February 2002.
Each "Two In One" show is divided into 10 segments, including the "Sex Battle," in which male and female callers compete by answering three questions and sharing their knowledge of the opposite sex. In a segment called "Subtitle," the hosts give a voice-over translation of a popular Western song as it plays.
A "long time" has passed since a caller felt offended and hung up, Bachinsky said. "Our listeners are a collection of perverts. Remember: if you have even listened to our show once, you are not a healthy person."
